Description for 2022/23

The ability to research a specific topic, assemble relevant information, and combine it to create a detailed understanding of the topic, is invaluable in a wide range of careers. In this module students will choose a physics topic to research; students can choose from a substantial list of approved topics or suggest their own suitable topic to work on.

Aims
To give students who have decided to specialise in Physics the opportunity to investigate in depth a physics topic of their choice. To build on the communication skills that have been developed in previous years. To provide students with the ability to produce a coherent digest of information on a physics topic and demonstrate a broad awareness of ideas in physics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Research a chosen physics topic in detail, assemble information from a variety of sources, combine information from multiple sources into a coherent document.: 1,2,3
Write a dissertation on a chosen topic in physics including suitable content, structure and wording.: 1
Construct a poster on a chosen topic in physics including suitable content, structure and wording.: 2
Give an oral presentation on a chosen topic in physics including suitable content, structure and wording.: 3

8 hours tutorial attendance.
8 hour talk and poster session.
70 hours research and private study.
32 hours writing the dissertation.
16 hours preparing talk.
16 hours preparing poster

Description of Module Assessment

1: Dissertation weighted 60%
Dissertation 4000 words
Including submission of a draft report and a viva on the draft report.

2: Poster Presentation weighted 20%
Poster Presentation
The student will be required to present and defend a poster to their peer group and the Dissertation Committee (duration 15 mins).

3: Oral Presentation weighted 20%
10-minute oral Presentation
The student will be required to present a talk to their peer group and the Dissertation Committee and answer questions on the subject of the talk.
