Description for 2022/23

This module provides an introduction to research design used in Psychology. During weekly lab classes you will take part in a range of different studies. This gives you first hand experience of psychological research in action. It teaches you how to design and conduct psychological research in an ethical manner, calculate descriptive statistics and how to write up the findings of the research. An overview of each of the different research designs and types of data is given in the associated lecture each week.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Research Proposal weighted 40%
Brief Research Proposals
2 x 500 word research proposals, one utilising qualitative methodology and the other utilising quantitative methodology. This will be highly structured and brief so as Level 4 appropriate - students will be presented with a social issue and asked to design one qualitative and one quantitative research project to investigate the issue, structured headings (e.g. recruitment strategy, design, procedure) will guide students. This assessment utilises problem-based learning to encourage students to think broadly about research design considerations in a variety of ways.

2: Research Report weighted 60%
Partial lab report
Students will be required to submit a 1000 word lab report consisting of an abstract, introduction, method and descriptive statistics sections
