The Principles of Assessment and Measurement module introduces the student to research. It enables the student to understand and apply common research terms (i.e sensitivity, specificity) to common assessment and measurement tools (i.e goniometry). Students will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills of data collection and audit.The module aims to facilitate the students understanding of some research terms and apply this to common measurement tools used in clinical and practice settings.
Aims
This module aims to:- develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of assessment and measurement. - introduce students to common practices within the Health and Rehabilitation setting that require assessment and/or measurement for the individual (assessment, diagnosis, monitoring progress, screening) and the service (e.g. audit). - introduce students to the concept of audit and the audit cycle.
Intended Learning Outcomes
recognise the role and contribution of assessment and measurement in health and rehabilitation settings.: 1explain the basic types of data collected in practice (qualitative, quantitative) and the basic properties of data (normal distribution and levels of measurement): 1compare the key properties (validity, reliability, error) of commonly used outcome measures and diagnostic tests from data presented in journal articles.: 1identify solutions to enhance the measurement properties (validity, reliability, error) of commonly used tools in health and rehabilitation.: 1list the key stages within the audit cycle and explain the value of audit within health and rehabilitation settings.: 1
30 tutor led hours which may include lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, practicals and two hours of assessment preparation classes etc.120 hours of independent study including 20 hours of guided independent study.

1: Online Tasks weighted 100%90 minute online taskThe students knowledge and understanding of the principles of assessment and measurement, their value and importance in the applied or clinical setting and methods to enhance their properties will be explored via various tasks e.g. multiple choice questions, matching, ordering sentences etc.
