Description for 2022/23

The Enhanced Practice: Neurological Rehabilitation module builds on content introduced in Years 1, 2 and 3 of the MSci Physiotherapy programme and enables the student to enhance their critical understanding of the pathophysiological changes seen in soft tissues following neurological injury and to enhance the range of assessment and management approaches to manage common and complex presentations through clinical reasoning and formulation of a problem list. Students will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and evidence required to understand current physiotherapeutic approaches and the impact of clinical guidelines.
The module aims to prepare the student to work in neurological settings whilst also developing transferable skills, such as critical analysis, justification of intervention based on underpinning science and reflection on current best practice and evidence, that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialities.

Aims
- To critically evaluate the pathophysiological basis of common neuromuscular impairments encountered in neurological rehabilitation
- To develop knowledge and critical understanding of theory pertinent to neurological rehabilitation
- To develop knowledge and critical analysis of current best practice in neurological rehabilitation including applications of technology
- To facilitate clinical decision making through use of evidence based practice in the management of patients with complex neurological problems

Intended Learning Outcomes

Formulate and justify a reasoned physiotherapy prioritised problem list for neurological rehabilitation: 1
Critically evaluate and synthesise current evidence to support clinical decision making and management choices in the application of neurological rehabilitation: 1
Rationalise and evaluate assistive technologies used in the management of neurological rehabilitation patients: 1
Select, justify and evaluate appropriate outcome measures for neurological rehabilitation: 1
Create, justify and evaluate a programme of rehabilitation to facilitate function, activity and participation with a variety of neurological presentations: 1

Study hours

38 tutor led hours which includes:
~36 hours lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials and
~ two hours of assessment preparation.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Oral Exam weighted 100%
Oral examination
A 30-minute oral examination, based on a case study. Prior to the oral examination students will be required to submit a 1000-word account of their clinical reasoning of management based on the case to inform the examination discussion.
