This module will provide the opportunity for students to broaden and deepen their knowledge of the principles of science and technology of advanced forms of medical imaging. Additionally the module will draw together the many strands of imaging science previously studied and link them in such a manner that the student will appreciate the role of the radiographer in managing and promoting these medical imaging modalities in specific patient pathways. Radiation protection and professionalism will be integral concepts for this module.
Aims
This module will provide opportunity for students to broaden and deepen their knowledge of scientific and technological principles underpinning advanced forms of medical imaging. The module will link all aspects of previously studied imaging science, so the student can understand the radiographer's role in managing and promoting these modalities in specific patient pathways within patient-centred care. Professionalism and radiation protection of the operator, the patient and the public will be integral to this module.

Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts related to advanced imaging modalities including image acquisition, display and quality. Radiation protection and professionalism will be integral concepts;: 1,2,4Independently perform head computerised tomography (brain);: 2,3Assist with routine examinations in computerised tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US), nuclear medicine (NM) and health screening programmes ;: 2,3Understand the evidence-based medical application of advanced imaging modalities in the patient pathway as per the related healthcare guidelines;: 1,2,4Critically evaluate the relative value and the role of medical imaging modalities in the delivery of individualised patient care.: 1,2,3,4
This module will employ a blended approach to teaching and learning. Sessions exploring current guidelines for health and well being of individualised patient care are delivered via lecture, small group discussion and tutorial supported by on-line student exchange of opinion. University based learning will be supplemented by practice experience.It is anticipated that study hours will include approximately 83 hours of practice experience. This is derived from a total of 413 hours, averaged across five of the six assessed modules in year 3 (excludes Professional Development 3).
Description of Module Assessment
1: Seen Exam weighted 100%A seen exam with a choice of 2 questions from 4 to be answered within 2.5 hours with appropriate aide memoirsA seen examination with a choice of 2 questions from 4 to be answered within 2.5 hours (50 marks per question). Students can prepare material in two of four topic areas (viz: neurology, trauma, oncology and cardiac) to describe the utility and reliability of ADVANCED IMAGING MODALITIES in their chosen patient pathways with reference to healthcare related guidelines for Radiology/ Radiography.
Students will be able to bring in 2XA4 pages with aide memoirs of referenced material to aid their critical thinking/ understanding of principles of the imaging modalities, and evaluation of the role of imaging modalities. The questions will be structured to examine knowledge and application within four main areas of investigation: initial diagnostic imaging, therapeutic imaging/ interventions, short term follow-up and long-term follow up of a patient within the pathway/ guidelines.
2: Practice Based Assessment weighted 0%Portfolio B: Radiographic CompetencyAssesses those aspects of student competency mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to assessment of specific radiographic practice competencies undertaken during Practice Experience.
3: Practice Based Assessment weighted 0%Portfolio C: Clinical Assessment CompetencyAssesses those aspects of student competency mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to the mandatory clinical assessments undertaken during Practice Experience. Year 3 competencies: theatre, CT head, adaptation of technique (non ambulant - minimum 2 anatomical areas demonstrating significant case complexity).
4: Practice Based Assessment weighted 0%Portfolio E: Oral Examination 40 minsAssesses those aspects of student knowledge and application mapped against the intended learning outcomes of this module: with reference to complex trauma, to include all appendicular and axial plain imaging, as well as computerized tomography of the head.
