The world of work shapes people's life chances and social identities. This module is about the changing world of work, employment and organisations. It aims to equip students, first, to understand processes of globalization and de-industrialisation, and how recent social, economic and political changes affect skills and employment opportunities and, second, to equip students to plan their careers effectively and navigate the graduate labour market as agents. Practical resources and workshops that focus on skills development, employability and career planning will complement the academic focus on the sociology of work. These two aspects of the module will enable students to analyse their own experiences in the labour market, contextualise their knowledge and experience within contemporary and historical trends and, thereby, help them to prepare for entry into the labour market as graduates.
Aims
The aims of this module are twofold: first, to enable students to understand processes of globalization and de-industrialisation, and how recent social, economic and political changes have affected skills and employment opportunities and, second, to develop a personal career portfolio that supports them to navigate the graduate labour market. The focus on practical skills and careers development, in tandem with teaching on the sociology of work, organisations and contemporary labour markets, will enable students to contextualise their own experiences in the labour market, cultivate graduate attributes, and develop practical skills that will enable them to navigate their pathways in the graduate labour market.
