Description for 2022/23

This module is designed for students' who have completed Spanish 3 (or equivalent). It will further develop communication skills, enabling students to conduct routine tasks they are likely to encounter in socialising, living, studying, travelling or working in Spain. Main topics studied will be shopping, making travel and social arrangements, state of health, talking about events in the past, skills, discussing plans for the future. Cultural background of Spanish society as well as traditions of the Hispanic world (i.e. Food habits and daily meals, Easter/spring celebrations, etc) will be presented throughout the module, thus providing the foundations for further study or work in Spain and Latino-America..
The course book will give a basic outline and will be supplemented by regular video work and other materials. Students will also have the opportunity to practise and reinforce vocabulary and language structures by using computer exercises in KLE, linked to the weekly classes.
Upon successful completion of this module and provided that students apply themselves fully to the course, by attending all classes, full use of practice materials on KLE will and engaging whenever possible with Spanish native speakers, they will normally have reached level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR - A2)


Aims
The module aims at improving students communication skills; to consolidate previous grammatical knowledge and widen their vocabulary; provide them with a basic understanding of culture specific behaviour; and enable them to become efficient language learners.

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one Spanish language module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken interaction assessment
A 5-6 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive) and listening (receptive) skills. Task may include role play, presentation, question and answer, description and similar. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups individual marks will be awarded to each student and the total time allowed will be 5-6 minutes per student.

2: Exam weighted 50%
1 hour reading/writing
Examination testing writing and reading skills and the command of active and passive vocabulary from the topic areas studied.
