Description for 2022/23

The learning in this module will enable students to develop the knowledge and skills required to practice Social Work with adults. Within this module there will be various learning activities, which will support the students understanding and application of relevant legislation and theory. The module will support the development of a range of skills required to practice in adult services, these include assessment, communication and reflection. There will be a focus throughout on the lived experience of individuals from a range of service user groups, such as older people, people with learning disabilities, people with physical disabilities. There will be contributions from current practitioners and a range of learning activities including group discussion, group activities, analysis of case studies and formal teaching. The assessment will enable students to demonstrate their understanding of adult social work, and its application to practice scenarios. The knowledge and skills learnt on this module will equip students to work with a variety of service user groups, and within a range of practice settings.

This module will enable students to develop the knowledge and skills required to practice effectively with adults. The aim is also to enhance students' analytical skills in relation to adult social work, with a focus on the lived experience of individuals and families.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Analyse contemporary adult social policy, wider socio-political contexts and their relationship to practice and service delivery in social work with adults: 1
Analyse and apply legislative and legal frameworks which underpin social work practice with adults and consider these in the multi-agency context of social work: 1
Consider and analyse the tensions within adult social work, including those inherent in upholding the individual rights of service users and their families to autonomy and independence, whilst also assessing and managing risk and safeguarding: 1
Analyse the complexities of multi-agency and partnership working in adult services: 1

Demonstrate an understanding of risk assessment, risk taking and risk management in the context of professional decision-making and accountability:

Lectures/workshops 58 hours plus tutorials 2 Hours
smaller group work may be used to supplement whole group sessions, within the above hours (depending upon size of student group) to promote in depth discussion and deeper learning.
Independent Study: 240 hours
