Description for 2022/23

On this module, students will be introduced to social work research and its significance for practice. It will offer the opportunity to explore and analyse quantitative and qualitative research applicable to social work. Students will develop skills in assessing the usefulness of this research for
practice with particular service user groups.
Learning will include the use of visiting speakers with expertise in specific client groups and research tools.
Students will have the opportunity to select research relevant to their choice of a particular service user group in their work for the assignment on this module,
This module builds on learning from studying social work in level 4 and contributes to the development of skills important for all level 6 modules and in particular the level 6 research module and placement.
This module forms an essential part of learning on the social work degree. The ability to use evidence-based practice is a key professional skill and as such is applicable to all social work careers.

Aims
The module aims to introduce research methods in and for social work, whilst also developing a research-minded approach to students' professional and academic development. The module will support students to understand and begin to critique the main quantitative and qualitative research approaches drawn upon within social work.

Lectures - 12 hours
Workshops - 18 hours using a problem based learning approach
