Description for 2022/23

This module is the first in a stream which develops a students professional skills. The module establishes the concept of evidence based medicine, and the relative value of different types of evidence. It also starts the student on their life long journey of professional development by introducing the concepts of professional responsibility, reflection and lifelong learning.
This module addresses the following RCVS Day One Competencies (RCVS, 2020):
1 - Act professionally as informed by the RCVS Code of Professional Conduct
2 - Act in a way that shows understanding of ethical and legar responsibilities, appropriately balancing competing interests
3 - Demonstrate the ability to critially review and evaluate evidence in support of practising evidence based veterinary medicine
9 - Demonstrate situational awareness through navigating and responding to the economic and emotional context in which the veterinary surgeon operates
10 - Demonstrate self-awareness of personal and professional limits and know when to seek professional advice, assistance and support
11 - Demonstrate commitment to learning and professional development including recording and reflecting on professional experience and other learning aimed at improving performance and competence
15 - Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the organisation, management and legislation related to a veterinary business
17- Communicate effectively with clients, the public, professional colleagues and responsible authorities, using language appropriate to the audience concerned

Aims
The aims of this module are:
1. To introduce the concepts of professional responsibility and the roles of professionals and paraprofessionals within the veterinary health sector
2. To develop formal academic writing skills, an appreciation of primary and secondary literature sources and the concept of evidence based veterinary practice.
3. To introduce the concepts of reflective practice, personal and professional development and life-long learning
4. To develop understanding of health and safety and equality, diversity and inclusivity within the veterinary profession

Intended Learning Outcomes

Literature review
Literature Review on a given topic where literature search and critical appraisal are applied to draw evidence-based conclusions

2: Exam weighted 50%
Open Book Written Exam
In situ invigilated timed (180 minutes) open book written exam completed on digital platform. Series of short essays discussing set professional scenarios
