Description for 2023/24

This module combines training in fieldwork and writing skills. The
fieldwork component involves four elements: (i) a one day field
course to a sand and gravel quarry; (ii) a one day field
courses to study the geology of the Ercall Quarries, Shropshire; (iii)
a one week residential field course based in North Wales studying
Earth Systems phenomena, and (iv) a three day field course in
Llangollen, N. Wales.
The writing skills component involves producing pieces of work
using different scientific writing styles. All components of this
module are underpinned by a series of workshops.
This module continues in semester 2.

Aims
  • To provide an understanding of field geology
  • To examine geological features and processes in a field context
  • To develop an ability to take effective notes in the field and compile geological maps
  • To develop skills in authoring in a variety of styles
  • To develop students' learning, communication, time-management and self-management skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Training in making detailed observations and measurement of a variety of geological, geographical, environmental and biological phenomenon.
  • Development of skills in writing in a variety of styles.
  • Enhancement of IT skills via presentation of completed word processed reports and web pages.
  • Understanding of the use of the profiling scheme for monitoring self-development, setting goals and recording achievement.
