Description for 2023/24

This 30-credit module builds upon subject-specific and practical skills that have been developed in previous years of the course to carry out an independent research investigation within an area of applied geophysics. The module will include project formulation, research design, data collection, data analysis, data interpretation and report production. The completion of this module provides students with experience of a number of subject-specific and professional skills that are essential for employment or academic research in applied geophysics.

To build upon subject-specific and practical skills that have been developed in previous years of the course to carry out an independent research investigation within an area of applied geophysics.

Intended Learning Outcomes

use practical skills, such as laboratory, field, and computational techniques, in data acquisition, interpretation and analysis to successfully complete a piece of independent research at the forefront of the discipline: 1,2

Description of Module Assessment

1: Oral Presentation weighted 10%
Oral presentation on progress on independent project
Oral presentation of 10 minutes duration, taking place at the end of semester 1, on progress made on the independent project, including preliminary results, preliminary interpretations and forward planning for the remainder of the project.

2: Report weighted 90%
Independent Project Report
Independent project report of approximately 9000 words, including figures and tables.
