Description for 2023/24

This module is designed for students who have successfully completed French 1, 2 or equivalent (e.g. CEFR Level A1).
Thoughtfully designed to introduce the complexities of more advanced forms of the language, the course also engages with francophone culture.
You will be involved in a variety of experiences through audio-material integrated with the course, enabling you to participate in conversations and situations.
The course exploits every aspect of language learning methods, providing reinforcement of new ideas by carefully designed exercises and supporting material.
The language level of this module corresponds to A1+ work leading to Level A2 of the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR -A1+/A2).

Students who have a basic knowledge of written and spoken French will acquire more knowledge and develop writing, reading, speaking and listening skills, as well as an understanding of Francophone life and culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand familiar words, basic sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information, studies, hobbies, daily routine, etc.) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3
Understand, summarize and extract key information from simple written texts related to areas of immediate personal relevance: 1,2
Interact in simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions related to a range of topics (family and friends, hobbies, education, work, etc.), being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write simple notes, messages and short texts (e.g. personal letters or emails) related to areas of immediate personal relevance, making pertinent grammatical and lexical choices: 1,2
Recognise and use simple grammatical structures and rules in the target language and compare them to English: 1,2,3
Recognise and act upon basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations, demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the French speaking world, and identify different registers and varieties of the language.: 1,2,3

Study hours

22 hours of contact time in class.
40 hours assessment preparation and completion.
88 hours guided independent study.

School Rules

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only permitted to take one French language module per semester.
