Description for 2023/24

The course is designed for students with a very good knowledge of French and will develop your advanced communication skills in French in everyday situations as well as in more complex contexts, in particular in discussing a range of topical issues in French gaining some insight into the contemporary French speaking world.
You will both consolidate the skills you have acquired and build on them by moving beyond the situations of everyday life to more challenging and stimulating topics. You will extend your vocabulary base and be introduced to the more complex grammatical structures characteristic of formal written French. Feedback on formative and summative assessments will be provided at regular intervals.
The language level of this module corresponds to B1+ work leading to Level B2 in the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR B1+/B2).

Aims
This module aims to build on students' existing knowledge of French and consolidate all areas of grammar, while at the same time expanding the vocabulary base.
it will also enable students to confidently discuss various aspects of the contemporary French speaking world and enable communication, in both written and oral mode, in more formal areas of French.

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form
Students are only allowed to take one French module per semester.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Online Tasks weighted 30%
Online tasks
Students will complete a series of online exercises to assess their reading comprehension, grammar and writing skills in the target language.

2: Class Test weighted 20%
Class Test
Students will complete an in-class test which may include writing a short text in the target language in class.

3: Oral Exam weighted 50%
Spoken interaction assessment
A 12-15 minute spoken interaction assessment to test speaking (productive), listening (receptive) and conversation (interaction) skills. Tasks may include role play presentation, role play, description or similar and question and answer. If assessments are organised in pairs or groups individual marks will be awarded to each student.
