Description for 2023/24

This module is designed for students who have successfully completed Italian 1 and 2 or equivalent (e.g. CEFR level A1). This module will help you expand your vocabulary base and your ability to interact in everyday situations in Italian. Topics include asking for and giving directions, describing people, making travel plans and meeting arrangements. You will consolidate and broaden your knowledge of vocabulary and grammar in class, as well as practice your communicative skills. Various aspects of contemporary Italian life will be discussed to give you an insight into Italian culture and customs.
There will be a variety of tasks and exercises in class time, such as partner exercises, listening comprehension, video materials, role-plays, reading and writing tasks. You will consolidate the skills acquired in class through audio and video materials integrated in the course, and further web-based self-study exercises.
The language level of this module corresponds to A1+ work leading to Level A2 of the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR A1+/A2).

To consolidate written, reading, oral and listening skills in the target language, as well as providing students with an understanding of Italian life and culture.
To develop and reflect upon strategies for successful language learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Recognise and understand familiar words, basic sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of immediate relevance (e.g. personal information, studies, hobbies, daily routine, etc.) when people speak slowly and clearly: 1,3
Understand, summarise and extract key information from simple written texts related to areas of immediate personal relevance: 1,2
Interact in simple, familiar situations, asking and answering simple questions related to a range of topics (family and friends, hobbies, education, work, etc.), being able to ask for repetition or clarification, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly: 3
Write simple notes, messages and short texts (e.g. personal letters or emails) related to areas of immediate personal relevance, making pertinent grammatical and lexical choices: 1,2
Recognise and use simple grammatical structures and rules in the target language and compare them to English: 1,2,3
Recognise and act upon basic cultural differences as encountered in everyday situations, demonstrate knowledge of common traditions in the Italian/ speaking world, and identify different registers and varieties of the language: 1,2,3

Study hours

22 hours of contact time in class.
40 hours assessment preparation and completion.
88 hours guided independent study.

School Rules

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form.
Students can only take one Italian language module per semester.
