Description for 2023/24

This module will introduce you to key aspects of the UK intellectual property regime including trademarks, copyright, design rights and patents. You will also consider some of the theories used to justify the intellectual property rights regime and will be encouraged to critically evaluate such justifications. The module will encourage you to engage with the moral and social implications of intellectual property rights protection.
The module will blend practical and theoretical aspects making it relevant to those of you looking to practice in the commercial legal environment, as well as those intending to continue to future academic study.

Aims
This module aims to introduce students to:
the notion of intellectual property;
intellectual property law in the UK and the rights it guarantees;
the theories underpinning the existence of intellectual property rights; and
critical examination of the moral/ethical implications of such rights.
