This module is an opportunity for students to explore a specialist topic in Mathematics and to develop their skills in Mathematical reading and writing, independent study, and time management. Students will be supervised by a member of staff, who will recommend a variety of sources and support students via weekly meetings. The main assessment activity is the production of a structured report in which students synthesise, reinterpret, and enhance material from the sources they have studied.
Aims
To provide an opportunity for students to work independently on a specialist Mathematical topic that is not otherwise incorporated into our curriculum. Also to provide an opportunity for students to develop their skills in assimilating and synthesising Mathematical material from a variety of sources, Mathematical writing, evaluating their own understanding, and time/project management.
Intended Learning Outcomes
work independently to assimilate and synthesise information on a specialist Mathematical topic from a variety of sources: 1,2select and apply suitable approaches to solve problems or answer questions concerning their chosen specialist topic: 1,2present, reinterpret, and enhance the material they have studied in the form of a structured Mathematical report, using appropriate typesetting software: 2
4 hours lectures/training related to Mathematical reading / writing and module administration; 12 hours group meetings with topic supervisor;134 hours of private study. An indicative breakdown of the 134 hours of private study would be 10 hours preparing and completing the assignment; 34 hours preparing and completing the structured report; 90 hours assimilating and synthesising material from the sources recommended by the supervisor, completing exercises, solving problems, creating examples etc, as appropriate to the topic chosen.
The school will maintain a list of supervisors and topics, as well as a mechanism for students to indicate their preferences.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Assignment weighted 20%AssignmentAssignment testing material covered in the first half of the module. The precise formulation of the assignment will depend upon the topic chosen. Students will have one week to complete the assignment.
2: Report weighted 80%Structured ReportA written mathematical report in which students synthesise and reinterpret material from the sources they have studied and enhance it by creating their own illustrations and examples. A framework / skeleton structure will be provided. The length of the report will not exceed eight pages, including figures and tables.
