In this module, you will build on knowledge of physics taught at school by taking the familiar subject of mechanics, but integrating it with calculus-based mathematics, thus laying the foundation for physics and astrophysics degrees. In addition, you will study basic parts of physics, including conservation laws, laws of motion, rotational mechanics, Newtonian gravity, and Einstein's theory of special relativity, along with the necessary mathematical techniques. Throughout the module you will develops skills in applying physical principles and mathematical techniques to physical and astrophysical situations.
Aims
To provide an understanding of mechanics, gravity and special relativity, and to develop the use of mathematics to solve physical problems. To develop the transferable, problem solving and mathematical skills that are required by the practising physicist or astrophysicist.
