Description for 2023/24

The Research Skills and Funding module builds on content introduced in Year 1-3 of the MSci Physiotherapy programme and enables the student to understand funding bodies and to differentiate between approvals required for research.
Students will have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required for grant applications and participate in the peer review process.
The module aims to prepare the student to produce a grant application and write a review for a funding application, whilst also developing transferable skills (such as knowledge of audit, team working and academic writing skills) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialities.

Aims
This module aims to develop the students knowledge and skills required to seek funding for a research project related to health care; the value of the peer review process will be introduced and practised. It is envisaged that the skills developed will be transferable to support applications for any source of healthcare related funding.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Critically identify the essential features and qualities, including the strengths and limitations of a healthcare related research proposal.: 1

Study hours

30 tutor-led hours which may include lectures ~15 hours, workshops and seminars ~10 hours, tutorials ~3 hours and two hours of assessment preparation classes.
120 hours of independent study, including 20 hours of guided independent study.

Description of Module Assessment

1: Oral Presentation weighted 100%
25 minute oral presentation
25-minute oral presentation (comprising 15 minutes of oral presentation and up to 10 minutes of questioning) - The student will present their research proposal in a manner to attract funding (value, impact, relevance, feasibility in terms of resources, time, cost, equipment and expertise will need to be demonstrated) having acted on feedback from the formative peer review session (feedback is related to scientific merit).
