Description for 2024/25

This module is designed for students who have completed Italian 4 or equivalent (e.g. CEFR level A2, GCSE grade 6-9/B-A-A*). It will expand your vocabulary base and ability to interact in a variety of situations in Italian.
All language skills - reading, listening, speaking and writing as well as the pragmatic-socio cultural dimension of the language- are integrated in the seminars. The topics covered in this module include describing personalities, attitudes and feelings; giving advice; and talking about past experiences. Cultural background of Italian society and traditions are present throughout the course. You will also enquire into the ways we learn and acquire a language (motivations and difficulties when learning Italian).
Teaching will be based around a series of class materials which will be supplemented by a range of audio, video and online materials. There will be a variety of tasks and exercises during each class, such as discussion and role play, listening comprehension and reading and writing tasks. There will be regular group and pair work.
The language level of this module corresponds to A2 work leading to Level A2+ in the European Common Framework for Languages (CEFR).

Aims
This course aims to consolidate existing language skills and further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills as well as general language learning skills.
The course is also designed to offer insights into cultural aspects of contemporary Italy and of the Italian speaking world.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Admission to the module must be confirmed through completion of a language level self-assessment form.

Students can only take one Italian language module per semester.
