This is the first theory module in the first year of a three-year programme leading towards a BSc (Hons) in Adult, Children¿s, Learning Disability or Mental Health Nursing and eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The module includes theory that will equip student nurses with the essential knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours for professional nursing practice. The module will instil a sense of professional identity for the student nurse whilst ensuring that the fundamental principles of person-centredness, respect, dignity and compassion are at the forefront of care delivery.
Aims
To introduce concepts of safe, effective, evidence based, person-centred care in the context of professional, ethical, legal and policy frameworks. Students will develop self awareness and effective sensitive communication strategies, that respects individuals diverse needs and preferences, learning how to confidently advocate for all people.

Breakdown of active learning hours hours-In situ- 48hrs (Lectures, discussion, seminars, tutorials, workshops, assessment preparation) Asynchronous- 42hrs (Guided independent study including preparation for scheduled sessions, follow up work) Independent study - 210hrs (Wider reading, revision, assessment preparation) Due to the dynamic nature of nursing programmes, the above breakdown may be subject to alteration.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Essay weighted 40%A 1000 word essay based on concepts of person - centred nursing care.
2: Practical Exam weighted 60%A 10 minute communication skills assessment with up to 10 minutes of additional questions
