Description for 2024/25

An opportunity to pursue a personal interest in computer science, learning and applying programming and technical skills that complement and extend those taught within the curriculum, under guidance from a staff member.

Aims
To provide supported, independent learning and practice of skills (such as expertise in specific programming languages or paradigms, or ¿state-of-the-art computing approaches used in industrial and research organisations) that are not otherwise incorporated in the curriculum.

Intended Learning Outcomes

define and pursue independent acquisition of a body of knowledge relating to a computer science topic: 1,2
identify and evaluate appropriate training/learning materials and plan their use effectively: 1,2
apply learning and acquired skills to complete a computer science project such as a software application or demonstration of a state-of-the-art computing technique: 1,2
disseminate the outcomes of their learning in the form of a poster and recorded presentation/demo: 1,2

Study hours

4 hours lecture/training related to the poster, presentation and demonstration.¿
2 hours consultation with module leader, reviewing plans, learning and skills acquisition.
4 hours of attending poster presentations by other students.
An indicative breakdown of the 140 hours of private study would be 20 hours planning and identifying sources and resources; 90 hours developing skills through completion of the project; 30 hours preparing poster, presentation and demonstration.

School Rules

Students will be asked to complete an online form, in which they state the area of study, outline how they intend to develop the necessary learning and skills, and propose a project that will allow them to demonstrate their learning and skills.
Students can only continue if their topic is approved by the module leader.
