'Gothic Nightmares' looks at spooks, automatons, monsters and supernatural horrors as they have manifested in fiction (literature, film, and TV) from the late eighteenth century to the present day. Each week we read a short story, a critical text, and we show an example of the genre from more recent film or TV. Why has the gothic persisted as it has? Why do we need to be scared? What are we afraid of anyway?
Aims
To introduce students to key literary texts from the gothic genre; to equip students with relevant theoretical perspectives.
