Description for 2024/25

Think that writing for children is simple or innocent? Think again. In this module you will look at a range of classic post-war British fiction for children including works of fantasy, historical novels, studies of growing up, and works exploring the nature of belief. Equipped with a module 'toolkit' (in other words a shared body of critical and theoretical concepts, methods and themes), you will develop your understanding of children's fiction alongside other students, with classes and one to one meetings to support your assessments.

Aims
To develop historical understandings of the field of children's literature.
To develop theoretical understandings of the field of children's literature.
To develop skills of literary interpretation and close textual analysis.
To provide an extended induction to academic practice in English (including the use of digital resources and AI)
