The content of this module varies from year to year to reflect current issues of particular concern in the field. However, central to controversies in palliative care are issues of policy, resource allocation and research, which form the central core of the modue. In recent years, it has also included seminars on special issues relating to the care of children; screening programmes; the role of religious belief in ethical debate; and differing conceptions of palliative care.
Aims
To enable students to apply ethical concepts and theories to a range of contemporary debates concerning health care provision, health policy, and public health - especially insofar as these things impact on palliative care.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge of some key controversies relating to policy, resource and research in contemporary palliative care practice.: Demonstrate some understanding of the ethical dilemmas raised by these controversies.: Assess, criticise and comparatively evaluate moral arguments concerning controversies in contemporary palliative care.: Apply ethical theories and concepts to a number of relevant ethical issues which are currently in the public domain relating to palliative care.: Demonstrate an ability to construct ethical arguments and essays concerning controversies in contemporary palliative care.:
