Description for 2024/25

This module will educate students to the many rules and regulations an individual should be aware of in relation to the UK Tax system. The module uses the latest tax rates and allowances and students will be expected to calculate the tax liability for a range of individuals with varying personal circumstances.
This module will provide many valuable and transferable skills. It aims to develop a number of graduate attributes including problem solving and research skills. It aims to develop knowledge and skills to obtain exemptions from professional accounting examinations.

Aims
This module will introduce students to the operations of the U.K. tax system. It will include the preparation of income tax and corporation tax computations, and tax planning. It will prepare students for further studies in accounting and it will also provide transferable skills.

Intended Learning Outcomes

explain the operations of the UK tax system for individuals, this is to include the purpose of taxation, self-assessment, implications of non compliance, tax avoidance and tax evasion.: 1,2
using a taxable person, calculate the taxable income and tax liabilities of individuals from a range of income sources (employed, self-employed, investments).: 1,2
using a taxable person, calculate the taxable value of benefits in kind. Appreciate the importance of a benefit such as a work based pension scheme.: 1,2
explain the range of National insurance contributions (NIC) for employed and self-employed persons, calculate NIC.: 1,2
identify and calculate Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and chargeable gains for individuals.: 1
explain and calculate inheritance tax.: 1
