Description for 2024/25

This module aims to develop engineering design concepts required in order to work as a designer within the context of medical devices and the healthcare industry. These will include investigation of design models, design control and communicating designs between industries. Team working is an essential aspect of design and this will be explored and developed.

Aims
The primary focus of this module is design control and associated methodologies. The aim of this module is to provide underpinning principles of engineering design and communications to enable students to undertake project based design studies within the context of medical devices and healthcare technologies.

Intended Learning Outcomes

evaluate and critically appraise advanced design methods within the context of medical devices and healthcare technology, and hence make suggestions and recommendations: 2
synthesise ideas, communicate with fellow professionals, and formulate engineering documentation commensurate with that expected of a professional engineering designer: 2
synthesise and evaluate design inputs from a variety of sources (end-user etc.) to formulate a coherent product design specification, to then generate ideas and make informed design choices: 2
critically appraise the role of the Professional in Society within the context of medical devices and healthcare technology and reflect on and evaluate performance within a team: 1,2

Study hours

Nominally 1-2 hours per week in one block (18 hours total) containing a mix of
lectures, seminars and group work: but this may vary dependent on the planned activity.
