Description for 2024/25

This module identifies a range of conditions that the mother may experience during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Students will explore the potential impact of these conditions on the developing pregnancy, and also the impact of the pregnancy on the condition itself. Students will be exposed to a range of teaching and learning methods to uncover the pathophysiology behind these conditions to facilitate best practice care provision and midwifery and medical management.
The scaffolding approach used in this module builds upon the students knowledge and experience gained within year 1 of the midwifery degree programme to prepare the student to be able to provide high quality evidence based care.

Aims
This module aims to develop the knowledge and evidence base required to promote effective midwifery care. In addition, you will be introduced to complications affecting the pregnancy continuum and your role in assessment and management.

Intended Learning Outcomes

discuss the additional care needs of women reporting pre-existing or emergent complications and explain how the pathophysiology of such complications may impact on the childbearing process/transition to parenthood: 1
evaluate the midwifery care and medical management of a woman experiencing a complex pregnancy and its outcomes

with regards to women with additional care needs, evaluate the impact of working collaboratively with other professional agencies when implementing evidence-based care to maximise perinatal outcomes: 1
demonstrate skills of literacy, digital, and technological literacy needed to ensure safe and effective midwifery practice (standard of proficiency 1.23 & 5.12, NMC, 2019b: 1

Study hours

This module will comprise of 100hrs of active learning hours: 50 hours face-to-face, online or group work sessions, and 50 hours directed study related to module content including wider reading, session preparation, access to electronic resources etc.
