Description for 2024/25

This module explores key concepts and models used in health promotion and aims to develop an appreciation of the main educational approaches that can be used in implementing health promotion.
The student will explore factors contributing to health and wellbeing of individuals and communities, and will examine ways in which health information is communicated. The module will enhance the students ability to work sensitively and inclusively and develop recognition for diversity and differences in approaches.


Aims
This module aims to develop your appreciation of public health and health promotion. The module will explore the physical, psychological, social and cultural factors that can inform the woman¿s pregnancy journey in order for you to safely and effectively lead midwifery care.

Intended Learning Outcomes

explore current evidence on public health strategies and health promotion at local and national level and interpret their impact upon the lived experiences of women who are accessing maternity care

develop an appropriate strategy to communicate evidence based health promotion messages addressing the physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual safety of women and newborn infants

demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how educational and leadership theories can help to support and deliver health promotion messages and in doing so, evaluate their own personal effectiveness as a leader in health promotion

explore the contribution of multi agency and interdisciplinary teams in optimising the health and well-being of women and families and recognise their role in referral to promote sustainable mental health and well-being, positive attachment and an optimal transition to parenthood: 1
demonstrate an understanding of the need for an ongoing focus on health promotion and well-being during maternity care whilst remaining as an advocate for women, infants and families across all settings: 1
demonstrate skills of numeracy, literacy, digital, and technological literacy needed to ensure safe and effective midwifery practice (standard of proficiency 1.23 & 5.12, NMC, 2019b): 1
