Teaching sessions will prepare students for the skills required in the clinical environment and in the majority will be interactive sessions, and where possible, will be delivered by speakers from their field of speciality.
Aims
This module will support you to meet the proficiency, skills and values as required of the programme and NMCb (2019) under close supervision from practice assessors and practice supervisors. You will develop proficiency in appropriately identifying, explaining and evaluating your midwifery care and medical management of a woman/fetus/neonate with additional care needs and complications, making appropriate use of relevant current evidence and guidelines. You will have the opportunity to provide continuity of care for a small group of women under close supervision.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Competence weighted 0%Computer software test of numeracy and drug calculationThis is a computer based package to assess the students' competence in drug calculations. Time allocated 1 hour. A mark of 80% or above is required to pass. The student must be successful in all assessments to pass the module.
2: Objective Structured Skills & Clinical Examination weighted 50%OSCEThis interactive examination in a simulated environment will focus on the students performance in two OSCE stations based on selected clinical scenarios and assess students ability to discuss elements of clinical practice and explain the underpinning theory. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of an additional complexity of pregnancy / neonatal period relating to either mother and/ or the neonate. Clinical skills will be assessed as well as the students ability to verbalise a management plan to ensure safe care delivery for the mother and/ or fetus and/or neonate. Students must be successful in both OSCE stations in order to pass this assessed component. The average grade is calculated as the agreed mark for the component. In cases where the outcome of one station is unsuccessful, the student will be required to resit the station and if successful, the agreed mark is capped for the component overall. The student must be successful in all assessments to pass the module.
3: Competence weighted 50%Practice based assessment based on the Midwifery On-going Record of Achievement (MORA)This is an assessment undertaken by Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors as on an on-going basis of clinical competence and achievement of learning outcomes in practice placements. There are 4 elements within this assessment; professional behaviours, practice based episodes, proficiencies and holistic assessment of care. The holistic assessment descriptors assessment will be completed by the Practice Assessor, this will be translated into a grade using marking criteria by the Academic Assessor. The student must be successful in all assessments to pass the module.
