This module is suitable for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals who wish to acquire an introduction to healthcare ethics and law.The module focuses on the fundamental aspects ethical issues and the underpinning legal statures that support our professional practice. You will also have enhanced your ability to think critically about this speciality and develop your reasoning skills.
Aims
The module will facilitate you to critically analyse, explore and debate ethical and legal concepts, issues and theories relating to health and social care. It will provide knowledge and understanding of ethical and medico-legal theories, and the skills needed to apply them to real-world scenarios in a diverse range of healthcare contexts.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Critically examine ethical issues related to health care practice, critically analysing different approaches to ethical theory, values and reasoning that inform decisions in healthcare practice, policy, and law: 2Critically appraise and apply the legal framework (statutes and case law) relevant to the jurisdiction that applies to health care practice: 1Critically analyse the rights and responsibilities of health care professionals and patients as the consumers of healthcare, acknowledging the importance of considering the patient¿s dignity and perspective is critical to all clinical encounters: 1Critically analyse and examine personal professional practice in relation to healthcare ethics and law: 1
F3- Active Learning hours: Lead lectures, seminars, problem-based learning (40 hours), group tutorials, group work, (10 hours) reflective sessions on learning, personal tutorials and group tutorial for assessment preparation (10 hours) asynchronous activities : (30 hours) = 90 hoursF4-Independent study = 60 hours

Description of Module Assessment
1: Oral Presentation weighted 60%PresentationSeminar presentation to be delivered to the rest of the group. This will consist of a maximum number of 10 students and relevant teaching staff involved in this assessment. The presentation will be for 20 minutes and up to 10 minutes for questions / discussion. The presentation topic must be of a health or social care nature and have an ethical dimension to it. The presentation should provide an analysis of the different perspectives inherent within the topic area, with a requirement for students to ensure that the evidence base and theoretical underpinning of their presentation is evident within the presentation. In addition to this, students will be required to answer questions from the markers.
2: Assignment weighted 40%Supporting paperThis assignment will be focused on the presentation that is the basis for assessment one. It will provide a critical overview of the pertinent points contained within the presentation. The word limit will be 1,000 words for this assessment.
