Description for 2024/25

Students enter their first year at University with a wide range of abilities. Skills for Bioengineering is a core first year module that allows students to develop the required skillsets to be a successful graduate level scientist. The module provides a foundation in key areas that are built upon during the degree.
You will develop general skills required for effective scientific communication, the analysis of scientific literature, and the interpretation and presentation of scientific data. You will take part in a series of practicals on cell culture techniques, allowing you to practice lab skills in readiness for the practical components of other modules. Additionally, you will develop self-learning, attention to detail, and team-work skills.
The module will use of combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and laboratory-based classes to support your understanding of the key topics.

Aims
This module will introduce essential study and practical skills needed for students to become successful graduate level scientists. The module provides a foundation in key skill areas that are further built upon during the BSc Bioengineering (Regenerative Medicine) programme.

Independent study hours (100 total): 30 hours preparation for essays and presentations; 20 hours preparation for practical sessions and associated assessment; 20 hours pre-reading before lectures/tutorials/workshops; 30 hours private directed study.
