Description for 2024/25

In the last two decades, two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a class of materials with great potential for a variety of applications. These materials are very thin (only a few atoms thick) and have a large surface area, which results in very interesting and intriguing properties. In this module we will discuss the properties and potential applications of several 2D materials, including the most famous one: Graphene, whose discovery was rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2010.

Aims
The module aims to introduce the students to the world of two-dimensional (2D) materials, presenting their main features, properties and potential technological applications. It also aims to discuss the role of 2D materials in devices and products that will revolutionize the 21st Century and their impact on society, industry and environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Communicate effectively the key fundamental physical properties and applications of 2D materials and the differences between 2D materials and other classes of materials: 1,2,3
Locate, evaluate and extract information from the literature related to 2D materials: 1,2
Evaluate the properties and characteristics of 2D materials and apply this understanding to rationalise and predict the applications of 2D materials: 1,2,3
