Description for 2024/25

This module has strategic value for the MSc International Diplomacy Programmes.
Conceptually, it offers a cutting-edge approach to the study of diplomacy, examining the evolution of the field of diplomatic studies, and focusing in-depth on non-traditional actors, diplomacy within states, between states and citizens, and asking how diplomacy is conducted and regulated. Practically, this module trains students' advanced communicative skills and toolkits for their careers.
This module suits the university's agenda to Decolonise the Curriculum agenda as it focuses on non-Western cases and non-traditional actors. More importantly, the overarching theoretical lens in this module is critical IR theory which examines conventionally ignored states, actors, and perspectives. It will attract international students as well as home students who wish to build a new perspective of understanding diplomacy.

Aims
This module provides an overview of the field of diplomatic studies and familiarises students with the affective dimension of diplomacy. We ask crucial questions such as trust and empathy in both the practice and the analysis of diplomacy. This module offers a cutting-edge approach to the study of diplomacy, examining the evolution of the field of diplomatic studies, and focusing in-depth on non-traditional actors, diplomacy within states, between states and citizens, and asking how diplomacy is conducted and regulated.
