Description for 2024/25

In this module, you will be assigned a dissertation supervisor, with whom you will meet in your dissertation supervision group and on a one-to-one basis. In groups and in one-to-one supervision, you will be able to discuss and evaluate issues relevant to your planned research study and will be guided in submitting your application to the School student project ethics committee. You will have the opportunity to submit a draft dissertation, on which you will receive detailed feedback.

Aims
To develop the ability to show originality in the application of counselling knowledge.
Handle complex issues systematically and creatively.
Make sound judgements in the absence of complete data.
Communicate conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Independently advance own knowledge and understanding, to acquire new skills.
Have the qualities and skills for employment requiring exercise of initiative, personal responsibility, decision making in complex and unpredictable situations, and continuing professional development (CPD).
Draw upon the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions and BACP Ethical Guidelines for Research

Study hours

45 hours of contact time, comprising:
7 x 5 hours meetings in supervision group - in-situ/synchronous
10 hours individual guidance from dissertation supervisor - in-situ/ synchronous
555 hours private study, including conducting research study, preparing for and writing up the dissertation.
