This module forms part of the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme at Keele which is an innovative programme of study which prepares the graduate for clinical practice in changing health and social care settings. P&O Practice Placement 1 introduces the student to P&O healthcare / industry settings. The module aims to prepare the student to work in diverse healthcare settings whilst also develop transferable skills (i.e. multidisciplinary team working, organisation and observe leadership and advance their communication skills) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialities.Graduates of this programme are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and membership of the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (BAPO).
Aims
1. To provide a practice placement orientation opportunity for students with a particular focus on either a prosthetic or orthotic setting 2. To enable the student to develop and reflect upon their own (and others') personal and professional behaviour and modify appropriately in light of their learning. 3. With the support of practice educators, the student will observe P&O practice in a relevant setting critically reviewing comprehension, skills, attitudes and professional behaviours of healthcare workers and their responses to service users in a relevant setting. 4. Students will start to critically observe, analyse and reflect on effective assessment strategies and evidence-based P&O practice.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Critically reflect upon and compare aspects of effective communication and interactions with service users, carers and members of the inter-professional team: 1Identify and prioritise an agreed problem list with a practice educator and justify the inclusions for a basic assessment and provision of prosthetic/ orthotic devices.: 1Discuss appropriate handling and recording of service user information with due regard to professional and regulatory guidance/ requirements, placement base policies and legal and ethical frameworks: 1Demonstrate self management skills by beginning to plan, organise and prioritise their own learning and work activities: 1Critically reference and apply the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students and the BAPO Code of Professional Values and Behaviour: 1
08 hours of teaching include:~06 hours allocated for preparing the students for placement, workshops/ tutorials.~02 hours will be allocated for student debriefs with tutors following placement. The placement learning hours include:~75 hours of Practice Placement.Students will be encouraged to undertake self-directed study throughout the placement.
