This module forms part of the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme at Keele which is an innovative programme of study which prepares the graduate for clinical practice in changing health and social care settings. Practice Placement 2 builds on the previous observational practice placements, as well as educational content learnt earlier in the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme. This 4 week placement enables the student, through P&O practice placement to further develop and apply knowledge and skills in both assessment and service-user management approaches. The module continues to prepare students to work in diverse healthcare settings whilst also developing transferable skills (i.e. multidisciplinary team working, leadership and communication skills) that can be applied in a variety of healthcare settings and specialties.
Aims
This module aims to:Enable the student to evaluate their personal and professional development focusing on both self and the management of others. Further enhance student communication skills and start to develop service user management skills Develop skills to effectively and efficiently assess and critically evaluate service user device design, prescription and provision in a relevant P&O setting.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Begin to contribute effectively to service user integrated care by evaluating and demonstrating effective communication skills with service users, carers and members of the inter-professional team: 1,2Perform and modify (when necessary) an assessment, and subsequently identify a (prioritized) problem list to meet individual service users¿ needs (with supervision appropriate to the student¿s stage of learning): 1,2Articulate clinical reasoning skills to differentiate between diagnoses (in commonly seen P&O conditions) and thereby propose a reasoned P&O management plan: 1,2Handle and record service user information in accordance with professional and regulatory body guidance/requirements, placement base policies, legal and ethical frameworks: 1,2Demonstrate self management skills by directing and managing own learning on placement; planning, organising and prioritising work/ placement activities: 1,2Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of the HCPC Guidance on Conduct and Ethics for Students and BAPO Standards of Best Practice.: 1,2Start to demonstrate discernment when evaluating and articulating the effectiveness of different P&O devices and service user management approaches: 2Identify and document anonymised service user examples of evidence-based innovation in P&O assessment / provision.: 2
Scheduled learning hours of teaching include:~02 hours allocated for preparing the students for placement.~02 hours will be allocated for student debriefs with tutors following placement.~ 4 hours of guided independent study material. The placement learning hours include:~150 hours will be Practice Experience based hours.Students will be encouraged to undertake self-directed study throughout the placement.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Placement weighted 70%Criterion Referenced AssessmentThe student's knowledge, skills and professional behaviour on P&O Practice Placement 3 is assessed using a criterion referenced form
2: Workbook weighted 30%Work book of anonymised service user scenariosThe student will construct and develop from this practice placement onwards, the student will complete four anonymised service user case scenarios, with particular focus on critical appraisal of the evidence associated with innovative P&O assessment/ management approaches.
