Description for 2024/25

This module forms part of the MSc Prosthetics and Orthotics programme at Keele which is an innovative programme of study which prepares the graduate for clinical practice in changing health and social care settings. The Essentials of Prosthetics and Orthotics Assessment module introduces the student to the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake and interpret the information gained from a subjective and objective service user assessment in order to formulate an effective management plan.

Aims
To support students' translation of theoretical knowledge to be able to undertake a less complex service user assessment relating to common P&O presentations.
The module will enable students to analyse the components of a P&O assessment in core areas of practice (predominantly lower limb), such that they can conduct a clinical assessment safely, prioritise service user problems and accurately record their findings.
This will require knowledge, clinical skill, the ability to logically sequence, appropriately interpret and analyse findings from the service user assessment to formulate an individualised management plan.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Critically appraise, distinguish between and be able to comply with a range of P&O assessment techniques and measurements and introduce students to the different casting techniques with an emphasis on the lower limb.: 1
Assess a service user (consultation and clinical examination) with a P&O need holistically and prioritise problems. This should take into account psycho-social factors and include history of pathology e.g. trauma, age, capacity, learning ability, outcome desired as well as physical ability.: 1
Choose condition-specific biomechanical knowledge to analyse and integrate the findings of a P&O assessment to accurately relate a service user¿s problems/diagnosis.: 1
Evaluate an individual's physical capabilities in context of pathophysiology.: 1
Professionally select effective communication skills.: 1
Integrate the service user in the planning and undertaking of diagnostic assessment techniques and relevant measurements to propose a mutually agreed management plan.: 1
