Description for 2024/25

The module builds on research knowledge and skills introduced in Year 1 and builds on the student research proposal submitted in Year 2. Either individually or in small groups students will conduct a research study, collate, input, manipulate and analyse their own data using data management software. Tutor led workshops covering data analysis will support independent learning. The module is largely student-led and each student is supported by supervision from a member of staff within the School through to full submission of the student final written research report.

Aims
This module aims to develop further the student research skills through the conduct and write up of a research project.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Independently perform a comprehensive search and critique of the literature to identify and extract relevant evidence for a research project: 1
Manage, manipulate, analyse and interpret data in an evidence based manner (determined by the type of research study conducted): 1
Independently manage a research project to completion (incorporating organisational, time management, communication, collaborative working and IT skills): 1
Identify and discuss possible dissemination strategies to optimise the impact of research: 1
Design and conduct a research project incorporating relevant research design theory: 1

Study hours

Active learning includes:
Meetings with supervisor for assessment preparation (~6 hours)
Lectures (~ 10 hours),
Workshops (~ 10 hours),
Tutorials (~4 hours)
Individual requests for statistic and ethics preparation (~10 hours).
~ 260 hours - independent learning for the creation of the dissertation; these hours are approximate and based on previous guidance for student non-directed preparation of a research report. All of these hours will be self directed with only the tutor-led hours accounted for numerically. Estimates for these include, but are not exhaustive, depending on the type of method the dissertation uses:
~20 hours for intro
~40 hours for literature review
~50 hours for method
~40 hours for findings/results
~50 hours for discussion
~20 hours for conclusion/ recommendations
~15 hours for abstract
~10 hours for reference list and citations
~15 hours for assembly of dissertation.
