Description for 2024/25

The aim of this module is student facing and enables apprentices to evaluate complex traumatic conditions and pathologies related to the human body with consideration of the examination referral in the context of the care pathway, and to comment on these in line with the required professional and graduate attributes.

Aims
The aim of this module is to enable apprentices to critically evaluate and comment on pathologies of the plain imaging, CT head, MRI head and spine related to the human body with consideration of the examination referral in the context of the care pathway with in-situ teaching.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Critically evaluate and explain the appropriateness of imaging requests related to the progression and consolidation of pathologies and trauma: 1,2
Critically analyse and evaluate complex trauma and pathologies using appropriate database search strategies of the plain film: 1,2
Accurately communicate radiographic findings in a written format: 2
Systematically analyse plain images to describe, recognise and comment on the radiographic appearances of complex traumatic and pathological processes: 1,2
Critically evaluate, comment on, identify and describe gross pathologies on CT head scans: 1,2
Critically evaluate, comment on, identify and describe gross pathologies on MRI heads and spine: 1,2

Study hours

16 hours of scheduled teaching including:

Description of Module Assessment

1: Workbook weighted 30%
Workbook - incorporating continuous milestones with scenarios, initial image commenting tasks and interesting cases
Workbook with clinical scenarios, initial image commenting tasks, structured reports and interesting cases The workbook will be structured using - Multiple choice questions Short answer questions Scaffolded reflection on practice relevant to module content Log book of interesting cases practice structured reports

2: Exam weighted 70%
in situ 60-minute examination with short and long answer questions mapped against the ILOs of the module¿
in situ Image based short and long answer examination ¿ 60-minute examination. 10 structured questions focusing on the taught content. Exam is made up of compulsory cases - to include plain imaging, CT head and MRI and clinical indications for apprentice interpretation. This examination assesses the apprentice's ability to determine the appropriateness of imaging requests related to progression and consolidation of pathologies and trauma, describe and recognise the radiographic appearances of complex traumatic and pathological processes, and communicate radiographic findings in structured comments. This is required to be in-situ and on specialised monitors with high resolution (as in the Jack Ashley Digital Health Hub) since the images that are used are of reporting quality to show subtle pathologies as seen in the clinical environment in cross-sectional and plain radiography.
