BSc (Hons) Radiography (Diagnostic Imaging) Apprentice route
The understanding of imaging technologies and techniques, anatomy, physiology and pathology, and professional considerations gained at previous levels of study will be brought together in the holistic consideration of patient pathways with a focus on the imaging aspects of patient management. Apprentices will develop further their ability to critically evaluate and justify clinical decision-making particularly in respect of the use of the various imaging technologies and the adoption of guidelines in the development of imaging services.
Aims
The aim of this module is to enable the apprentice to synthesise their understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology; imaging techniques; and models of healthcare to evaluate patient pathways based on published evidence and national guidance. This will ensure critical thinking and clinical reasoning with leadership and management is applied to multiple aspects of the role of imaging in a variety of patient pathways and will future-proof the graduate radiographer within the rapidly changing imaging departments.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Understand the evidence-based application of the full range of imaging modalities in the patient pathway as per the related healthcare guidelines: 1Critically evaluate the relative value and the role of medical imaging modalities in the delivery of individualised patient care, including consideration of patient presentation, service design, cost effectiveness and radiation protection concerns: 1Critically discuss the implications for collaborative working with respect to the impact of commonly presenting conditions within defined pathways for individualised patient care: 1Justify appropriate clinical decision making informed by the synthesis of anatomical, physiological and pathological knowledge of the human body and the evidence base.: 1Apply appropriate clinical decision making using the evidence base to understand the changes needed for a successful patient pathway and service improvements.: 1
Scheduled teaching of 15 hours for in-situ lecturesIndependent study hours - *Feedback seminars ~65 hours for the formative reusable learning objects (there are 15 scenarios with 4 hours allowed per feedback session on these learning objects) and guided collaborative and independent study ~ 80 hours (working alone and in groups to create the reusable learning objects for each feedback session) ¿ please note that 140 hours are made up of time away from the clinical environment as per the 20% required time for apprentice academic study.
Description of Module Assessment
1: Essay weighted 100%3,000 word essayA 3,000 word essay on one of a restricted choice of patient scenarios, describing a full patient pathway based on a critical evaluation of the available evidence and guidelines, to include a comparative and critical evaluation of the imaging modalities available at the various stages of the pathway. The formative work undertaken throughout the year in this module will form the reusable learning objects which will guide the final summative assessment essay.
