This module provides the first of two practice placement opportunities for students. This 70-day experience in a suitable agency provides valuable social work skills development and experience.
Aims
The module aims to enhance the students¿ evidence-based knowledge, analytical and practice skills in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care with adults, children and families, taking into consideration the context of contemporary social work policy and ethics in order to meet regulatory and professional body expectations.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate an initial level of professional capability in Social Work Practice in line with Social Work England requirements and all domains of the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF) (British Association of Social Workers (BASW) 2018) 'End of First Placement Level': 1Demonstrate effective use of knowledge and skills via the building of relationships with a range of individuals and/or groups with a range of needs and completion of 'assessments', recording information, working within a team in a given setting: 1Demonstrate capacity to begin to work with situations of greater complexity and where solutions and outcomes are uncertain or less clear-cut, with supervision and support: 1Critically select and use specific social work models, skills and interventions and evaluate their impact: 1Engage in reflective supervision and demonstrate an ability to respond to feedback from a range of sources: 1Demonstrate ongoing Fitness to Practise/Suitability for practice in accordance with regulatory, professional and university regulations, and demonstrate an adherence to the British Association of Social Work Code of Ethics and to working towards the professional standards of Social Work England: 1Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in partnership with other organisations and with service users and carers, as appropriate to the specific placement organisation: 1
Active learning hours:In situ or synchronous: 12 hours group tutorials (8 x1.5 hours) approx monthly70 placement days in placement organisation. Within this, the equivalent of half a day per week, taken as agreed with placement provider, to be taken to support reflective practice and to enable the collation of evidence and portfolio building. Placement: 70 placement days (usually 7-8 hours per day) within allocated organisation.Independent study hours (remote, asynchronous): 28 which will be used to read and prepare assessment work and also to read around areas of practice interest.

Reports from Practice Educator and Onsite Supervisor (where applicable), to verify students¿ capability against the 9 domains of the PCF and relevant Social Work England Standards
