Mapping mobility
Mapping mobility is a sister project to Zero Carbon Rugeley, with a specific focus on understanding the current patterns of active travel, including the use of mobility-assistive technologies, in Rugeley. The project aims to analyse the routes people currently take by active travel, as well as where the key barriers are to using active travel therein.
The project utilises a ‘citizen science’ approach, which involves recruiting and training community volunteers to help with data collection, community engagement and data analysis. The data collection role will ask members of the Rugeley community to record the routes they take using the mobile app ‘MayMyTracks’. The community engager role will ask community members to recruit others to take part and to help designing engagement materials about active travel. Finally, the data analyst role will train citizen scientists in how to use Geographic Information Systems to help analyse the routes which have been collected. The project therefore aims to empower local people with necessary tools to encourage active travel from a grass roots, community-led perspective, all whilst helping to drive down local carbon emissions from private transport.
