Horwood Energy Centre
Keele’s campus was recently transformed into Europe’s first smart energy test site to develop pioneering green technologies and help cut the UK’s carbon emissions. The £22 million programme, called the Smart Energy Network Demonstrator (SEND)*, is a world-leading development in collaboration with international tech-giant Siemens, which turned Keele’s campus into a ‘living laboratory’.
- Started: 2017
- Completed: Summer 2019
- Project value: £22 million
In 2021 the centre was visited by the Government’s Minister for Climate Change, who praised Keele’s pioneering work in sustainability and new green technologies. At the heart of SEND is the Horwood Energy Centre, a hub where a constant stream of live energy data can be integrated, processed and analysed by state-of-the-art intelligent information systems. The building also has workspace and facilities for business engagement.
