A Little Act of Kindness

Our practitioner workshop in the form of a documentary performance entitled A Little Act of Kindness followed by a forum where the audience and volunteer performers share their experiences and debate key issues in volunteering.

Connected Communities 'A Little Act of Kindness' is the final phase of an AHRC Connected Communities funded research project entitled: 'Exploring Personal Communities: A Review of Volunteering Processes'. The project is based on a collaboration between Professor Mihaela Kelemen and Dr Anita Mangan at Keele University and Sue Moffat, Director of Borderlines at the New Vic Theatre. The event brings together volunteers who have participated in the audio documentation of their volunteering experiences and who have formed a new volunteering company to devise and perform a piece of documentary theatre sharing the story of volunteering with an audience of community members, academics and people involved in the voluntary sector.

The performance is followed by an interactive workshop exploring what volunteering means in today’s society, and whether the integrity and essence of volunteering is changing. Following the performance and workshop, light refreshments will be provided and an opportunity to continue the discussion over lunch and a 'little cup of kindness'.

Alternative Modes of Organising: Communitarian Dreams and Immediate Realities

Conveners

Mihaela Kelemen, Keele University, UK
Anita Mangan, Keele University, UK

The stream brings together researchers interested in alternative modes of organizing in response to the moral crisis that contemporary organizations appear to be facing. The focus will be on communal modes of organizing but the stream will not be restricted to them. Both conceptual and theoretical papers are welcome as well as papers taking a localized or a cross cultural perspective on the issues.
