Stroke research group
Multidisciplinary group of researchers interested in stroke, ranging from lab-based projects related to cerebral ischaemia, reperfusion, and mechanical thrombectomy to clinical studies of treatments for acute stroke, stroke prevention, rehabilitation and life after stroke.
We have strong national and international links with clinical trialists running large muticentre stroke studies.
Bench to bedside and clinical stroke research with projects ranging from lab-based studies related to cerebral ischaemia, reperfusion, and mechanical thrombectomy to large multicentre clinical trials of treatments for acute stroke, stroke prevention, rehabilitation and life after stroke.
Researchers include Gilbert Gravino, Phillip Ferdinand, Ranjan Sanyal, Anushka Waruseviatane, Indira Natarajan, Sanjeev Nayak, David Wells, Changez Jadun, Noman Qayum, Carol Wilson.
Ongoing projects include
- In vitro experiments investigating blood flow and embolization during mechanical thrombectomy for stroke.
- MAPS-2 Multicentre RCT of metoclopramide for the prevention of pneumonia and death after stroke.
- GEKO multicentre RCT comparing surface electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve with intermittent pneumatic compression for the prevention of venous thromboembolism after stroke.
- The UKYSS Young Stroke Study.
