Professor Arun Pherwani

Professor Arun Pherwani is Honorary Professor at Keele University School of Medicine. He is Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. He was the first pure vascular surgeon appointed in 2003. He is the Clinical Lead for the National Vascular Registry (NVR) and Chair of the Audit and Quality Improvement Committee for the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VSGBI). He is Joint Clinical lead for the National Consultant Information Programme (NCIP) for Vascular Surgery NHS England, and Chair of the Specialised Services Devices Programme (SSDP) for Vascular NHS England. He is a member of the National Clinical Reference Group (CRG) for Vascular Surgery. He is also a Member of the National Steering Board for the Medical Devices Outcome Registries and Patient Safety Programme (ORP) NHS England and NHS England’s Steering group on Acute Aortic Dissection (AAD).

Professor Pherwani has served on the Executive of the VSGBI. He has been the Independent Chair of the Lancashire & South Cumbria Programme Board for the reconfiguration vascular services. He is a member of the Board of Examiners for Vascular Surgery Joint Committee for Intercollegiate Exit Examinations (JCIE). He represents the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS Eng) Invited Review Mechanism (IRM) programme.

Professor Pherwani with colleagues from the VSGBI led the Peripheral Arterial Disease Quality Improvement Framework (PAD QIF). This was supported by NHS England with the two-year incentivised CQUIN payment scheme for 2022-2024. During his tenure, the NVR have produced three National Annual Reports, three National COVID-19 reports on the impact of the pandemic on vascular patients, and have pioneered the collection of Aortic Device Data with two National reports on Aortic Devices and Revision Aortic procedures.

Professor Pherwani is the UK’s representative on VASCUNET, the European and Australasian collaboration of Vascular Registries and the International Consortium of Vascular Registries (ICVR). He is also the VASCUNET representative on the European Research Hub (ERH). He sits on the aortic group and has led the most recent report of International outcomes from AAA surgery on patients from 10 international registries over a 6-year period.

Professor Pherwani’s expertise is in national registries, using national data and coding to improve outcomes for patients, and collaboration with international registries on research and audit. His research interests are in aortic aneurysm surgery, aortic dissection, improving outcomes for patients with peripheral arterial disease and in thoracic outlet conditions.
