PPIE in research
The Research User Group was set up in 2006, with members who have experience of long-term conditions, are carers or close relatives of someone with a long-term condition. It is vital that we listen to the people who live with these conditions on a daily basis in order to produce the very best research evidence possible.

The roles of a RUG member can include:
- Advising on research design
- Reading and giving feedback on research materials (e.g., questionnaires, letters to patients, consent forms)
- Commenting on new research proposals
- Membership of project steering committee’s
- Co-applicants within grant submissions
- Team members within research studies
Members of the RUG also represent the Centre at meetings with outside organisations such as:
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
- Versus Arthritis
- Diabetes UK
- Breathe Easy North Staffordshire
- NIHR School for Primary Care Research
