Professor Brendan Stone

Professor Brendan Stone is Deputy Vice-President for Education at The University of Sheffield, and Professor of Social Engagement and the Humanities.
Brendan has research, teaching, and public engagement interests in narrative, identity, and trauma; mental distress and ‘recovery’; and engaged scholarship. He is the founder and director of the Storying Sheffield project, and Director of Sheffield Flourish, a mental health charity which frequently works with Universities and the NHS. Brendan’s work often involves him working in partnership with a wide variety of organisations including NHS Trusts, businesses, social enterprises, and local government. He is a Non Executive Director for Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Trust, a member of Medical Humanities Sheffield, a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Mental Health, a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a University of Sheffield Senate Fellow.
Brendan is currently co–Chair of the NHS England Strategic Oversight Group for the programme on the Use of Restrictive Interventions in NHS Commissioned Health Care. In 2017 Brendan won the Academic and Health Science Network’s Excellence in Patient Experience award for his work with people living with mental illness.
