About the Institute of Sport
The Keele University Institute of Sport makes use of our excellent existing teaching facilities, including our recently opened exercise physiology and movement laboratories, as well as a new bespoke sports laboratory opening in 2024/25, and offers a suite of exciting new sports programmes for those interested in furthering their sports knowledge and pursuing a career in the sport and exercise sector.
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study and take part in physical activity, exercise, and sport. That's why we have developed a wide range of exciting new undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, including; Sport and Exercise Science, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Sports Business Management and Esports Business Management, alongside a refreshed existing degree in Rehabilitation and Exercise Science.
The Institute will build on Keele’s well-established and leading reputation in health and medicine, rehabilitation and exercise science, business, and psychology, to deliver the suite of new sports-aligned degree programmes, and will also benefit from significant investment in new facilities to support teaching and research.
These include two new laboratories for students to study biomechanics and exercise physiology, with one laboratory already complete and another scheduled to open next year.
Our team of experienced academics - who have a wealth of research and practice experience - are dedicated to helping students achieve their goals.
Keele offers a thriving and dynamic environment for both teaching and research excellence. With a significant investment in new sporting laboratory facilities, and our large 600+ acre campus, there is plenty of space to study, play, exercise, and train.
Our interdisciplinary sports-related research is helping to change lives for the better. From research into lower back pain in retired Olympians, to developing new surgery for groin pain, 80% of research at Keele is deemed to be world-leading or internationally excellent (REF, 2021).
Professor Mark Ormerod, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at Keele University, said: “Our existing research and education expertise in healthcare, science, psychology and business make our new Institute of Sport a natural fit for Keele University and our campus environment as we expand our academic portfolio into sport and exercise.
“The investment in our new education facilities and the new academic appointments we have brought on board for the Institute will give students studying our new sports courses at Keele the best possible foundation for a career in the sporting, physical activity and wellbeing sectors.”
Talented Athlete Support Programme
Our Talented Athlete Support Programme is designed to help students sustain their level of sport and fitness whilst at Keele. We offer a range of support, from access to our sports facilities and coaches, to physiotherapy and help with seeking funding.
Alongside completing a one-year Master’s degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy, mature student Scott Bailey is also training for the 2028 Paralympics - "The Talented Athletes Programme is amazing and has really supported me to reach my potential by helping me to gain strength and fitness with the access I have to the amazing gym and great coaches."
